New research has shown that smartphones are increasingly being used to surf the mobile web by users around the world.
The April 2009 Mobile Metrics Report from mobile ad platform AdMob showed that 35 per cent of its worldwide ad requests were accounted for by smartphones - despite figures from Gartner revealing that 12 per cent of mobile device sales were estimated to relate to smartphones in 2008.
Apple's iPhone came out on top with 43 per cent of mobile web requests while accounting for eight per cent of the smartphone sector and Android saw three per cent of mobile web requests while representing less than one per cent of the overall smartphone market.
The research also found that smartphone users are more likely to access mobile-specific sites on their devices than full-featured HTML websites, although iPhone and Android users make heavy use of both types of site.
Mike Fyall of AdMob said in a blog post: "We think that regardless of where the big players place their bets, it will be the consumer that decides what gives them the best Internet experience on their mobile device and that will be what they use."
