Mobile web applications have undergone a "real revolution" in the past 12 to 18 months, the founder of Redmonk has noted.
Dr Dobb's Journal reported that Stephen O'Grady, who is also an analyst at the open source research firm, recently told a panel discussion that this change has largely come about thanks to improvements to mobile phone handsets.
In particular, he highlighted the popularity of Apple's iPhone as one of the major catalysts for change, as it offers users a "real web experience" rather than the "stripped-down" sites that could previously be viewed on handsets.
Mr O'Grady added that as mobile phones are steadily improving in capability, mobile web application developers can work to offer users a more "rich and deep experience" as they browse the web via their handset.
ZDNet blogger Larry Dignan asserted earlier in the week that the concept of having a smartphone may soon be a thing of the past.
He noted that all phones are becoming 'smarter' - with an increasing number of models offering internet access and email options - and it may not be necessary to make the distinction in the long-term.
