E-commerce managers 'universally optimistic'

21st May 2009

E-commerce managers are conveying a sense of universal optimism that their businesses will emerge successfully from the recession, the editor of Internet Retailer has note.

Don Davis, who said he has interviewed "dozens of retailers" in recent times", noted that there is "no sense of panic" among e-commerce executives when considering the long-term impact of the recession on their business.

He explained that in some cases, e-commerce retailers are more resilient than their bricks-and-mortar counterparts, particularly if they can show consumers that they can offer "low-cost alternatives".

And while the fact that some retail sectors perform at different levels of success makes it difficult to generalise about the industry as a whole, he noted that "sales seem to be picking up" in 2009.

Shop.org's The State of Retailing Online 2009 study, which was published earlier this month, indicated that one-third of all retailers surveyed claim to have captured a greater market share amid the credit crunch.

It also noted that some 24 per cent of e-commerce retailers intend to overspend on their original marketing budget, with the most popular areas of investment identified as search, social marketing and email marketing.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19182358-ADNFCR
