The global e-commerce sector can benefit from the development and success of social media in the future, it has been claimed.
Don Davis, editor of online retailing publication Internet Retailer has explained he expects to see a rise in the number of e-commerce companies using social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter to boost business, but warned such a development could take years to happen.
He explained that although many people have been hooked by the social networking craze, online retail firms have yet to work out the best way to use the technology as a marketing tool.
"I don't think any will have a big impact on online sales in the next year or so," he said.
However, he added: "Retailers will go where consumers are, and that's to the social networks and video sites. It's just not clear how effectively they'll be able to sell to them at those venues."
A recent survey carried out by Forrester Research on behalf of Shop.org, the digital division of the National Retail Federation, found the global recession is forcing e-commerce firms to change their approach to online retail.
It also revealed four out of five retailers believe the internet is better suited than other channels to withstand the recession.
