It is important for web developers to have an understanding of certain search engine optimisation (SEO) signals, an industry expert has suggested.
Practical E-commerce's Jill Kochner noted that SEO signals found in HTML headings, title tags and anchor text are among the 'loudest' and added that unless they are in agreement, search engines will only hear "garbled noise".
And while good websites are "structurally crawlable" by search engines such as Google, there are things web developers can do to make them even better.
For example, she noted that the most important keywords should appear at the beginning of title tags, as only the first 65 to 70 characters are displayed in search results.
In addition, the keywords used in title tags should be the same as those found in HTML headings.
Lastly, she suggested that relevant links to products or other pages could help boost a site's SEO rankings.
Her advice follows a recent article from Practical E-commerce's Lisa Wehr, who suggested that blended search terms could benefit online retailers.
