The amount of digital content being created and delivered over the web, phone networks and airwaves is growing rapidly, new research has revealed.
According to the study by research firm IDC for networking company EMC, the so-called digital universe will continue to double in size every 18 months, meaning that there will five times more digital content in 2012 compared with 2008.
Overall, about 487 billion gigabytes of digital content was produced last year, equivalent to three quadrillion Twitter feeds, 162 trillion digital photos or 30 billion fully-loaded Apple iPod Touch devices.
Digital content will continue to grow as 600 million more people become web users in the next four years, the report suggested.
Joe Tucci, chairman, president and chief executive of EMC, said: "Those who use information growth to their advantage are seeking out new and creative ways to manage, secure and protect the rapidly-growing volumes."
High demand for online content could lead to internet 'brownouts' from next year, Nemertes Research told the Times last month.
