A beta version of a new app for the Android platform that allows users to share their location with others has been launched.
Glympse makes use of a dynamic map to display the location of the user in question to people on their contact lists, doing away with the need to invite friends to use the service.
The app lets users select a specific period of time over which they want others to be able to see their location.
Contacts can view their friends' locations even without the app installed on their phones.
Glympse is currently available via Android Market for the T-Mobile G1 and will be launched for the iPhone, BlackBerry devices, Windows Mobile phones and other smartphones in the near future.
"We created Glympse to help people exchange location information in a way that's much more rich and powerful than phone calls and texts, but just as easy," remarked Bryan Trussel, co-founder and chief executive of Glympse.
Glympse may be seen to be similar to Google's Latitude app, which was launched earlier this year.
