Qualcomm has launched software that allows mobile operators to deploy app stores that can be accessed by users through any capable handset.
Plaza Retail also allows developers and publishers to make their apps available to multiple retailers quickly regardless of the development platform being used.
One of the main benefits of the product is the fact that consumers will be able to upgrade or change their mobile device without losing the apps they have previously purchased, Qualcomm said.
Arvin Chander, vice-president and general manager of Plaza Retail, said: "Consumer expectation is defining the market for mobile content and in order to remain competitive and contain costs as complexity increases, operators and device manufacturers will need to deliver more than just an application store."
Juniper Research recently released a forecast predicting that direct and indirect revenues from mobile apps will surpass the $25 billion (£16.2 billion) mark by 2014.
This growth will be driven by the launch of numerous app stores targeting both mass market and high-end mobile phones, it said in the report.
