Councils are better than private sector organisations at implementing website accessibility policies, new research has found.
The Society of Information Technology Management (Socitm) sent a survey to councils and private companies and conducted two mystery shopping tests via email.
It found that eight in ten council sites link to their accessibility policies on their homepages, while 44 per cent of private firms do so.
Meanwhile, nearly half of council accessibility statements were rated as satisfactory or excellent, compared with 16 per cent for the sample of private sector companies studied.
"The accessibility statement plays a key part in any campaign for raising awareness internally - and possibly externally - of the importance that the council attaches to this issue," stated Martin Greenwood, programme director for Socitm Insight and author of the report.
Council websites should do more to meet future demand for public services by enabling self-service capabilities, Socitm recently argued.
