Sales made via e-commerce websites rose by 14 per cent in the 12 months to April 2009.
This is according to the latest statistics from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, which also show that UK consumers are spending £10 more per website visit compared with last year.
The average value of an e-commerce basket was £131.76 last month, compared with £121.69 in April 2008.
Online sales of electrical goods and clothing, footwear and accessories grew particularly quickly last month.
Tina Spooner, director of information at IMRG, noted that the UK e-commerce sector has expanded by more than 5,000 per cent since 2000, with £200 billion being spent during this period.
"Internet shopping is clearly the bright spot in the UK retail sector but this industry is still young and has great potential for further growth," she remarked.
US e-commerce sales saw flat growth in the first three months of this year compared with a three per cent decrease in the same period in 2008, according to comScore.
