Orange has released new figures revealing that mobile data consumption is on the rise among its customers.
According to the mobile operator, more than 386,000 gigabytes of data were downloaded by its mobile internet customers every month between December 2008 and February 2009.
Use of the internet via mobile phone handsets rose by 108 per cent over the period, while unique visits to social networks were up by almost 50 per cent and monthly social networking page impressions increased by 129 per cent.
"It is clear that innovative, exciting and accessible content for the mobile platform is increasing the popularity of mobile services which are embedded on handsets or downloaded through applications stores," said Paul Jevons, director of products, portals and services at Orange.
According to Nielsen Online, UK consumers are the most likely to access social networks through their mobile phones compared with people in other countries.
About 23 per cent of UK mobile web users did so last year, while 19 per cent of US users did the same.
