New research has revealed that smartphone users helped to encourage growth within the US mobile advertising sector in the first quarter of 2009.
Conducted by GfK Technology for mobile social network Brightkite, the study showed that six in ten smartphone users recalled mobile advertising during the period, compared with 38 per cent of all US mobile phone users.
Furthermore, nearly one-quarter of smartphone owners said they recalled seeing SMS ads, with 20 per cent remembering mobile social networking ads and 15 per cent recalling mobile TV and video ads.
"We are seeing consumers adopting a much broader set of mobile applications and services and this is exposing them to new ad formats," commented Jonathon Linner, chief executive of Brightkite.
A recent study by the Internet Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers found that firms in the UK spent £28.6 million on mobile ads last year, up 99.2 per cent compared with 2007.
