Google has announced that it has now integrated barcode scanning capabilities into its Product Search app for Android phones.
The app works by allowing users to retrieve information on particular products - including prices and reviews - by scanning barcodes on the item they want to compare when in-store.
Google said that the scanner works best for electronics, books, movies and video games, but it is working on adding further barcodes for other products.
"Of course, if your scan does not return a result, you can always type in the product name just as before," commented Eiji Hirai, software engineer for the Google Mobile team.
The new feature is available in both the US and the UK.
Commenting on the news, Doug Caverly of WebProNews said that the barcode scanner may be the offering that helps to give Android devices an edge over rival handsets in the eyes of consumers.
