Firefox 3 or Firefox 3.5 could become the most used browser version this year, it has been claimed.
According to Mozilla director of community development Asa Dotzler, there is "a very real possibility" that this could happen.
Analysing long-term browser usage statistics from Net Applications, he said it is notable that new browser releases are failing to have a significant impact on macro usage trends.
"It's interesting that the trends are so very linear and that major releases from Microsoft and Mozilla don't match even the impact of the nominal seasonal changes," he remarked.
Meanwhile, the AI Internet Institute recently released a report showing that European usage of Firefox increased by two per cent between November 2008 and April 2009.
Usage of Internet Explorer fell by almost four per cent over the same period.
In the UK, one in six website visits were made through Firefox, although the browser had a higher penetration in Italy, Spain, France and Germany.
