Mobile manufacturers are likely to "pool resources" to develop cross-platform operating systems in an effort to offer consumers a less expensive mobile experience, according to the lead content writer for an independent mobile phone comparison site.
Tom Newton of Mobile Phones asserted that as funding for research and development is "drying up" during the credit crunch, manufacturers are teaming up with consortia such as the Open Handset Alliance and the Symbian Foundation.
In order to drive down costs, they adopt their platforms - which could lead to a more widespread adoption of cross-platform operating systems for consumer handsets and smartphones.
According to the Open Handset Alliance, which is a group of 47 mobile and technology firms that are responsible for developing the Android platform, better mobile phones can be created through a shared commitment to openness.
Its vision is to offer consumers a richer mobile experience and accelerate innovation in mobile phone technology.
