UK consumers spent 19 per cent more on e-commerce purchases in March than they did in the same month in 2008.
This is according to the latest statistics from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, which also revealed a nine per cent increase in online sales between February and March 2009.
While the recession has forced online growth to slow from the highs recorded in previous years, a number of e-commerce sectors are continuing to perform particularly well during the downturn, IMRG noted.
These include the clothing, footwear and accessories category, as well as the gifts sector.
"Retailers that have developed their online offering have been able to reap the benefits of growing trade online and have also increased their influence over high street trading," said Mike Petevinos of Capgemini, referring to the growing numbers of consumers using the web to inform offline purchases.
However, UK shoppers are spending less time on e-commerce sites and more time on news, media, entertainment and social networking sites, according to a recent Hitwise report.
