The mobile internet is seeing a significant change in the way in which content is created and published for the medium, according to one expert.
Speaking to the BBC, Jennifer Pahlka of TechWeb explained that web developers used to create sites and applications for the desktop web first before tweaking content for the mobile platform.
"We are seeing a big shift with the apps now just being made for the mobile device and people learning to use the phone in a number of different ways," she commented.
Ernest Doku of Omio.com, a comparison website, also said that it is important developers do not simply attempt to replicate the desktop web on mobile phones, as consumers expect different things from their handsets compared with the PC experience.
The iPhone is seen by some as the device that helped to popularise the use of the mobile web.
According to figures released by comScore earlier this year, 79.7 per cent of UK iPhone owners accessed news or information via their phone's browser in January, compared with 19.8 per cent of all mobile users.
