Adobe has announced that its Flash rich media technology can now be implemented in web-connected TVs, set-top boxes and Blu-ray players, among other devices.
The company has extended its Flash platform to allow developers to build rich applications that TV viewers can use without needing a web browser, as well as to deliver HD video to the living room.
Companies that are supporting the new Adobe Flash Platform for the Digital Home include system-on-chip providers, cable operators, content providers and OEMs such as the New York Times, Intel, Disney, Netflix and Comcast.
The platform is now available to OEMs, with the first products supporting the new Flash technology expected to begin shipping in the second half of this year.
David Wadhwani of Adobe said that Flash Platform for the Digital Home will help to significantly change the way in which content is consumed via TVs.
"Consumers are looking to access their favourite Flash technology-based videos, applications, services and other rich web content across screens," he remarked.
The company announced the new platform at the NAB Show, which has also seen Adobe unveil collaborative scriptwriting application Adobe Story and an updated version of Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.
