Rising web connections 'are a social revolution'

17th April 2009

The fact that more British households are now connected to the web than ever before is an indicator of "the biggest social revolution" in ten years.

This is according to Andrew Taylor of the Financial Times, who noted that figures from the Office for National Statistics show that 61 per cent of households had a web connection in 2007, up from ten per cent in 1997.

Other notable trends include the fact that 33.9 million over-16s - 71 per cent of the total adult population - logged on to the internet over a three-month period in 2008, he said.

Earlier this year, Karin von Abrams of eMarketer indicated that few UK consumers now access the internet via dial-up technology as new web services are increasingly demanding more accommodating connections.

These new internet offerings include the growing use of rich media elements to enhance product images by online retailers, she said.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19126812-ADNFCR
