The Android mobile operating system will have a good year over the next 12 months, it has been claimed.
Speaking at a conference call for Google's first quarter financial results, chief executive of the search engine Eric Schmidt said that "it looks like Android is going to have a very strong year".
He hinted that there will a number of major Android-related announcements this year, which could include deals with mobile service providers and launches of new products related to the operating system.
The comments came shortly after Android 1.5, the latest version of the platform, was unveiled to developers.
Google generated at $5.51 billion (£3.7 billion) in revenues during the first quarter, down slightly on the equivalent figure for the previous three months.
However, it posted strong net income growth for the quarter, with profits standing at $1.42 billion compared with $382 million in the fourth quarter of 2008.
