Mobile apps have been predicted to become more popular among consumers worldwide in the next four years.
A forecast from research company In-Stat said that more than 100 million app-compatible phones will be shipped globally by 2013.
It predicted that these phones will make up 30 per cent of the overall smartphone industry in the same period.
App store services are most used by those with an Apple iPhone, beating the likes of BlackBerry, Palm OS and Windows Mobile phones.
"Reach for marketing applications is growing rapidly and those applications can provide prolonged engagement with the user and keep the advertiser's brand in focus," said David Chamberlain, analyst at In-Stat.
However, the report added that the analytics available to those using app marketing are currently inadequate compared with the programs marketers are generally used to.
It was recently revealed that there now more than 25,000 apps currently available from Apple's mobile app store.
Overall, iPhone users have downloaded apps 800 million times since the store was launched.
