Mozilla has announced a partnership with Khronos Group to bring accelerated 3D graphics to the web.
The two companies will work together on an initiative to map out what 3D content would look like on the web.
Chris Blizzard, director of evangelism for Mozilla, said that the partnership is a reflection of open web technology's development beyond standard HTML and JavaScript-based web design.
He went on to reveal that the company intends to use accelerated 3D in post-3.5 releases of Firefox if the initiative gains traction.
"Adding 3D ... ensures that current web apps can experiment with new user experiences, while also enabling new classes of web applications," remarked Vladimir Vukicevic, graphics team lead at Mozilla.
The partnership will see the development of a royalty-free standard for accelerated 3D on the web, with the first version of the standard scheduled for release within the next 12 months.
Mozilla and Khronos will approach the project in a number of different ways, including exposing OpenGL and OpenGL ES 2.0 capabilities within ECMAScript.
