New research has suggested that global usage of smartphones is still rising.
According to mobile ad marketplace AdMob, smartphones accounted for 33 per cent of mobile ad requests in February, up from 26 per cent six months previously.
Requests made by the Android and Research in Motion operating systems helped to drive much of the growth of smartphones in the US specifically, AdMob said.
Overall, the top five smartphones worldwide were the iPhone, Nokia N70, BlackBerry 8300, Nokia N80 and Nokia N73.
Android accounted for about five per cent of the global market, while Symbian was the most used platform with 43 per cent of all requests.
"Despite challenging economic conditions, smartphones continued to gain significant market share worldwide over the past six months," AdMob said in a statement.
Worldwide sales of smartphones rose by 3.7 per cent in the final quarter of 2008, according to Gartner.
In total, 139.3 million such phones were sold over the course of 2008.
