Mega drop-down menus could do much to improve the usability of a website, according to web design expert Jakob Nielsen.
Mr Nielsen defines mega drop-down menus as those taking the form of large, two-dimensional panels that are divided into groups of navigation options and are organised so that everything is visible without the need to scroll.
He said in his latest Alertbox column that these menus can overcome the disadvantage of normal drop-downs as they do not require users to remember links at the top of the menu before they can scroll to the bottom of it.
They also enable web developers to use icons and pictures that can enhance usability, Mr Nielsen stated.
"Mega drop-downs may improve the navigability of your site. By helping users find more, they'll help you sell more," he commented.
Last year, Mr Nielsen called on websites to make use of navigation menus that are aligned to the left rather than the right as web users are more used to scanning the left-hand side of a page than the right.
