Google's mobile YouTube app has been optimised for the Windows Mobile and Nokia S60 platforms.
The app now allows users of phones running on these operating systems to take advantage of up to 90 per cent faster app start-up, search and video loading.
It is also capable of automatically checking the network capabilities of each device and delivering streams that best fit those specifications.
The app's Wi-Fi streaming has been improved, as has its buffering abilities, which means that videos can be played even in areas with weak coverage.
Alerts for one-click upgrades are also available for the app.
"Once installed, no configuration is required outside of the application. We've worked really hard to make video playback 'just work'," commented Andreas Tuerk and Stephen Spence of the Google Mobile team.
Almost five million British web users watched a YouTube video on their mobile phones in January, recent statistics from comScore revealed.
