Record traffic for Google Maps after UK Street View launch

Google Maps UK saw record traffic yesterday (March 19th) following the launch of a UK version of Street View, according to Hitwise.

The research company revealed that traffic to the site soared by 41 per cent yesterday and became the 20th most visited website overall.

Web users spent a longer than normal amount of time on Google Maps, with the average visit time standing at seven minutes and six seconds compared with five minutes and 28 seconds on March 18th.

The website was helped with a quadrupling in the level of traffic it received from news and media sites announcing the new Street View product, which covers a number of UK cities.

Robin Goad of Hitwise said: "The site received 7.9 per cent of its traffic from news sites, with BBC News the second largest source of traffic overall."

A number of UK partners have signed up to create different uses for the Street View product, including the Tate museum, VisitBritain and the Mayor of London.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19084854-ADNFCR
