A new feature for the Android mobile operating system could pave the way for live updates from a variety of websites being shown on mobile phones' home screens.
This is according to Sarah Perez of ReadWriteWeb, who explained that the Live Folders feature - recently showcased in a test version of Android - lets users see live updates of their favourite web content, such as new top stories on Digg.
However, the feature could go further than this and offer live updating RSS feeds, real-time stock quotes and fantasy football updates, she speculated.
"Since Android apps can run in the background, a Live Folders-enabled application could display update-related info right on the phone's home screen similar to how an email application displays the number of unread messages," Ms Perez remarked.
According to Net Applications, Android accounts for 6.26 per cent of the global mobile operating system market.
The iPhone comes out on top with 66.44 per cent of the sector, followed by Java ME with 9.11 per cent and Windows Mobile with 6.9 per cent.
