Hundreds of millions of people are experiencing the internet for the first time via mobile phones, according to Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, chief executive of mobile phone firm Nokia.
This highlights the relationship between the two technologies, which has seen services provided by laptops and phones become increasingly similar over the last few years.
"We don't have to look even for five years from now to see that what we know as a cellphone and what we know as a PC are in many ways converging," Mr Kallasvuo explained to Finnish national broadcaster YLE.
The chief executive's comments came as he revealed Nokia is "very actively" looking at opportunities to extend its product range to laptops, as well as mobile phones.
Nokia is already one of the top five mobile phone firms in the world - alongside Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and LG - but it remains to be seen what effect it could have on the laptop market.
