Usage of mobile search engines is on the increase, according to a new report from ABI Research.
Seven in ten mobile web users conducted a web search on their handsets last year, up from 14 per cent in 2007, the study revealed.
Furthermore, mobile web users are increasingly accessing a wide range of content from their phones, including news and downloads of games, music and video.
Jeff Orr, senior analyst at ABI Research, said that it is now clear mobile usage is moving past standard voice calls.
"A significant percentage of respondents say they use their handset for mobile email and web access, reflecting the broader access to inexpensive or all-you-can-eat mobile data services in the US," he stated.
Overall mobile internet usage increased by 63.4 per cent in the UK and by 73 per cent in the US in 2008, according to a recent report from browser maker Opera.
