Mobile web 'seeing strong global growth'

25th February 2009

The mobile internet is seeing strong growth in usage around the world, new figures have suggested.

According to Opera, usage of its Mini mobile browser saw particular growth - over 2,800 per cent - in Armenia last year.

Mobile internet use also surged by 1,854 per cent in Nigeria and by 1,391 per cent among Egyptian users.

Elsewhere, Russia was the country with the highest overall mobile web usage levels, followed by Indonesia, Ukraine, China and India.

The US and the UK placed seventh and eighth in the rankings respectively.

"Developing countries may lead the way due to the sheer prevalence of mobile devices versus PCs, but the solid growth rates in developed countries such as the US, the UK and Germany show that the entire world is moving in this direction," remarked chief executive of Opera Jon von Tetzchner.

According to comScore, 19 per cent of UK mobile users accessed the web via their handsets in the three months to November 2008, up five per cent on the same period in 2007.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19044732-ADNFCR
