Apple has released its Safari 4 web browser in public beta, offering a range of new features for users.
The browser makes use of the Nitro engine to execute JavaScript significantly faster than the current versions of Safari, Internet Explorer and Firefox, according to Apple.
New features include full page zoom, full history search, Top Sites - which lets users look at a visual preview of their most accessed pages - and Cover Flow for enhanced bookmark and web history browsing.
Advanced CSS effects harnessing of reflections, gradients and precision masks are also supported by the browser, together with HTML 5 for offline technologies.
"Safari 4 is the fastest and most efficient browser for Mac and Windows, with great integration of HTML 5 and CSS 3 web standards that enables the next generation of interactive web applications," stated Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide product marketing.
The majority of the global browser market is currently accounted for by Internet Explorer, according to Net Applications, although Firefox now holds over a fifth of the market, while Safari has a share of nearly 8.3 per cent.
