Commercial websites 'need formal strategic thinking'

23rd February 2009

Companies looking to establish a commercial online presence should take care that their e-commerce partner is willing to support them with strategic analysis, according to an advertising expert.

The Irish Times reported that Mark Cassin of DMA Response Advertising said that many websites suffer because they do not take their target audience into account in a strategically appropriate way.

He said that the purpose of a commercial website is to attract customers, not to show off "graphic bells and whistles".

Mr Cassin added: "The web is not simply a new medium in which to present your wares – it is a domain where you sell your wares using a well-defined set of marketing rules which, when obeyed, will get orders."

According to TechRadar UK, a top web design trend for 2009 will be an increased number of sites that are compatible with the Apple iPhone handset.

The browser for the iPhone lacks Flash support, but a number of sites - including Facebook and eBay - have iTunes applications.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19040975-ADNFCR
