The "key criteria" of good websites are usefulness and usability, according to a newspaper writer.
Jack Schofield of the Guardian wrote that while there is a place for attractive design, more important factors include speed, content quality, reliability and readability.
He added that sites such as eBay, Expedia, MySpace, Facebook and TripAdvisor "wouldn't win any beauty contests", but they are some of the most successful on the internet.
"Websites are not glossy magazines, they are software applications," he wrote.
"Pixel-perfect graphic designs have their place, but on the web, appearance is usually less important," Mr Schofield added.
This past weekend, Facebook integrated its LiveFeed with a number of websites around the world - including Variety, Flixster and E! Online - so that users could post status updates and comment on Sunday's Academy Awards in real time.
Earlier this month, the social networking site also announced its new gift scheduling scheme, which allows users to plan gifts for their friends for birthdays and holidays up to seven days in advance.
