Yahoo! is now enabling certain of its pay-per-click advertisers to embed rich media elements into their search ads.
The company's Rich Ads in Search scheme allows companies to include videos, images and custom search boxes in their sponsored ads on Yahoo!'s search engine listings.
According to a test carried out by Yahoo! last year, the new ads are capable of boosting click-throughs by about 25 per cent.
The scheme is invitation-only, although more advertisers will be able to make use of the rich media ads in the near future.
"Ever since we launched pay-per-click advertising, the ads have looked more or less the same: A headline, a line of ad copy, a link," remarked Jeff Sweat of Yahoo!.
"They haven't changed because, frankly, the combination works pretty well. But what if search ads could show more?"
Yahoo! recently celebrated the fifth birthday of its search engine, which was established on February 18th 2004.
