Most searched-for celebs revealed

19th February 2009

Financial expert Martin Lewis has topped a list of the most searched-for celebrities on the internet compiled by Hitwise.

The research company revealed that the man behind the popular Money Saving Expert website beat off competition from the likes of Barack Obama, Diana Vickers and Britney Spears to become the UK's most searched-for personality.

Leona Lewis, Cheryl Cole, Georgina Baillie, Miley Cyrus, Nicola Mclean and Katy Perry made up the rest of the top ten.

As well as shining a light on the UK's online fascination with celebrities, the fact that Lewis came out on top indicates that consumers are searching more for advice on their finances during the downturn, according to Robin Goad of Hitwise.

He added that the recession has also seen consumers use the web more to look for vouchers, second-hand goods and search for the best banking deals.

Google's 2008 Zeitgeist revealed that the fastest-growing search query globally last year was for Sarah Palin.
