Registrations of website domain names rose by 16 per cent in 2008 compared with the previous year, according to VeriSign.
The security company said that there were 177 million new top-level domains (TLDs) registered last year, 24 million more than in 2007.
Over ten million new domain names were registered in the fourth quarter of 2008 alone, VeriSign noted.
The five biggest domain names were those ending in .com, .cn, .de, .net and .org.
VeriSign also revealed that it is working with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers on new domain names incorporating local language characters, such as Japanese Kanji symbols.
Jill McNabb, vice-president of naming services at VeriSign, said: "The potential for internationalised TLDs to enable a universally accessible internet is promising. But it must be done right."
Netcraft said earlier this year that it had received server responses from almost 185.5 million websites in January, down an "uncharacteristic" 1.23 million compared with the previous month.
