The Mobile World Congress has seen further announcements made regarding new mobile handsets capable of running the Android platform.
Samsung Electronics revealed that it is to launch three Android phones by the end of 2009, as well as a handset that uses Linux software from the LiMo Foundation.
While it was not made clear whether the Android phones will be first launched in Europe or the US, Samsung head of product strategy Won-Pyo Hong said that the company "will be on both markets" by the end of the year, Reuters reports.
Meanwhile, Huawei Technologies also said that it is launching a new Android smartphone in the third quarter of 2009, although details of the phone's features were not revealed.
According to CNET, Huawei's touch-screen Android handset looks very similar to Apple's iPhone.
Smartphones will account for about one-quarter of the overall mobile phone market by 2011, Huawei said.
This is expected to increase to more than 30 per cent by 2012, it added.
