Britons spent just over £4 billion on purchases from e-commerce websites last month, new figures from the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index have revealed.
This represented a 19 per cent increase compared with January 2007, although online sales dropped compared with December 2008, according to the report.
Websites in the clothing, footwear and accessories category did well, posting the highest growth in spending out of all of the segments examined.
The beers, wines and spirits sector and gifts websites performed relatively poorly as a result of the seasonal spike in online sales in these categories over Christmas.
Mike Petevinos, head of consulting for retail for Capgemini UK, said that the e-commerce sector's continued success means retailers must invest more in developing their online operations.
"The question is whether bricks and clicks retailers can prioritise this sufficiently above the defensive strategies needed to combat tough high street trading," he added.
According to recent research from CyberSource, four in ten of those who do not use e-commerce websites are concerned about doing so due to security issues.
