Microsoft has revealed the latest edition of its operating system for mobile phones at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
Windows Mobile 6.5 boasts a redesigned user interface and improvements to its touch-screen functionality.
It comes with a new version of Internet Explorer Mobile for web browsing and is expected to be made available on selected devices in the second half of 2009.
Microsoft also announced the launch of Windows Marketplace for Mobile to sell apps for users of Windows Mobile phones, following in the footsteps of Apple's iPhone App Store and Google's Android Market.
Developers have already produced more than 20,000 apps for Microsoft's app marketplace. Microsoft additionally unveiled My Phone, a sync tool that helps users to back up their mobile contacts onto the web.
Nokia has also announced its own mobile app-selling facility, the Ovi Store, which will focus on providing tools and multimedia content with geo-targeting capabilities.
