Google has officially announced the launch of paid-for Android apps produced by developers in the UK and US.
Developers can select pricing for their own mobile apps, with these apps to initially be made available to US end users from next week.
The move comes after months of speculation over when such apps would be introduced for Android.
Users in other countries will be able to buy Android apps from the Android Market via Google Checkout in the next few months, commented Eric Chu of the Android Mobile Platform in a blog post.
Developers in Germany, Austria, Netherlands, France, and Spain will be able to offer apps for a fee later this quarter.
Mr Chu also announced the launch of the Android Market for free apps in Australia, which is already live.
A similar offering will be made available in Singapore in the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, Vodafone is rumoured to be set to announce a deal to offer a new Android mobile phone at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona later this week.
