Online retail portals experienced some of the biggest gains in UK web traffic during December, new statistics have revealed.
Research company comScore said that the jewellery, luxury goods and accessories, music, department stores and flowers, gifts and greetings retail categories were among those seeing the highest rises in unique visitor numbers last month.
Other popular categories included e-cards, shipping and online dating, the report suggested.
"Interestingly, visitation to online dating sites also grew significantly in December, as lonely hearts reached out to one another during the Christmas season," comScore said in a statement.
The top-gaining individual sites included HMV, Royal Mail, John Lewis, Dixons, Arcadia sites and Next.
However, Google continued to be the most visited website in the UK, followed by Microsoft, Yahoo!, Facebook and eBay.
This follows separate comScore figures released last week showing that Google is also the most popular website in the world.
The report revealed that one billion people globally now use the internet.
