Apple has revealed that its App Store for mobile applications has seen 500 million downloads since its launch last year.
About 15,000 apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch are currently available through the store.
The figures - posted on Apple's website - compared with figures of 10,000 apps and 300 million downloads in December.
Jeff Holden of social networking company Pelago used Apple's figures to work out that 17 million iPhone owners have now downloaded as many apps as 1.6 billion other mobile phone owners combined.
"To a developer, what this means is that if he launches an app for non-iPhones, he needs to have a reach 94 times as large as the reach he needs in the iPhone community to achieve the same number of downloads," he said in an email to BusinessWeek.
Mobile apps could become more important to retailers in the future as consumers increasingly refer to their mobile phones while shopping in physical stores, according to a recent report from ForeSee Results.
