Companies may want to ensure they do not fall behind the opposition by incorporating social media sharing buttons into their bespoke website designs.
With more individuals looking to broadcast links rather than share them in single file via email, companies could enhance their chances of becoming recognised through the buttons.
After collecting some statistics from social networking widget creator Gigya, Techcrunch reports that Facebook and Twitter distribute almost three quarters of the shared items between them.
Facebook tops the results by distributing 44 per cent, Twitter follows with 29 per cent, Yahoo commands 18 per cent and the remainder is made up by MySpace.
By simply pushing a share button on a website, consumers are able to distribute stories, photos or videos to friends.
Meanwhile, the websites of small and medium-sized businesses could also be improved by faster loading speeds.
Online retail expert Chris Thomas recently revealed in an article for Smart Company that website conversion rates are often best when visitors can spend more time browsing rather than waiting for pages to load.
