A website design expert has urged businesses to look at whether their website is suitable for mobile devices.
Writing for the GetElastic blog, Armando Roggio explains that, while browsers on a desktop do not differentiate too much, on mobile handsets there can be big variations.
Added to this, there are many different screen sizes, and all this presents designers and developers with a challenge.
One of the key decisions to make is what mark-up language to use and he recommends that HTML 5 would be the best choice, even though support is not completely widespread yet. An alternative would be XHTML.
Interestingly, he also believes that it is better to have a website that can be used across desktop and mobile browsers, as opposed to creating separate pages.
Additional layers of Javascript, CSS or Flash can then be added to provide richer content for visitors from different mobiles or browsers.
Mobile internet usage has recently been spurred by the development of smartphones such as the iPhone and the devices on the Android platform.
