Twitter has celebrated a milestone with its ten billionth tweet, a sign of its increasing importance in web development.
The statistic has come from GigaTweet, which keeps track of the numbers so far, with predictions for the future growth, although the figure is also in the public domain due to the fact that every tweet is numbered in its URL.
The microblogging service was set up in 2006 has already become the 12th most visited website in the world, according to Alexa.
It is also increasingly important to website development in a number of ways.
Twitter can be used as a way of sharing links, and websites can help promote their content by adding sharing buttons to the pages.
The service can also be integrated into a website so that a Twitter feed of relevant content is shown, using an applications or a widget.
According to GigaTweet's estimates, the 20 billionth tweet will come in just over 200 days if the current rate of growth continues.
