New codes of practice could affect bespoke website design

9th March 2010

New proposals for the advertising industry will have an affect upon advertising within any web design.

The Advertising Association (AA) has given its recommendations to the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) as it looks to address issues to protect consumers and children.

Among the recommendations is that any marketing on a company's own website comes under the remit of the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), as well as any content that is uploaded to social media sites like Twitter and Facebook.

At present, the ASA only regulates paid-for online activities such as search marketing and display advertising.

Rae Burdon, chief operating officer at the AA, said: "The industry has delivered to CAP a clear mandate that first and foremost will protect consumers and children, that will also - crucially - protect editorial content, and that will, if accepted, maintain CAP/ASA's reputation as a world-class operation."

David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, recently called for more regulation of marketing activity online, particularly due to the targeting of children.

He said that, if elected into government, he would seek to extent the remit of Facebook to social media.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19659670-ADNFCR
